what I did this weekend

Leslie
I bought me a Canon SD400 and a Canon PIXMA iP4000. When you buy the camera and the printer you get a $70 rebate . . . so how could I pass that up??? I couldn't. ;D I'm still learning my way around the camera . . . it will take some time. I haven't installed the printer yet though. I'll probably do that tonight. Mucho thanks to [info]yokes for his expert advice. Please check out his photoblog here.

Went to JoAnn's and got buttons for a dress and a blouse that I've been needing to change the buttons on for some time. Why is it that they make women's clothing now with those cheap, seashell crap buttons?? They're disgusting and ugly and never match the article of clothing anyways. They always make it look horrible! I used to pass up things simply due to this fact until it dawned on me to just change the buttons myself. Doh!

I pre-ordered the new Harry Potter book from Barnes & Noble back in February. What a waste. It made absolutely no sense to do that. The book didn't come until around 4pm whereas I could have been to the bookstore so much earlier than that to buy the copy myself. I don't think I'll make that mistake for book 7.

Went to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory last night. Eh. The movie was so-so. I didn't like the oompah loompah sections at all. The funniest moments were when Johnny Depp walked into the glass elevator. I laughed out loud! But what I'm mostly put off by is the fact that, unlike Wilder's movie where he explained at the end just why he chose to give his factory to a child, Depp's Wonka never explained that . . . and he never endeared himself to any of the children enough to give you the sense of what his reasoning may have been. It's not like he came to a revelation with his flashbacks either. I also didn't see how, after watching Depp's portrayal, he would have had the ingenuity to put those golden tickets in the candy bars. I mean, he seemed so . . . removed . . . from everything that I didn't see how he would have come up with that idea to do something so special for people. *shrug* Just my take on it. I most definitely could see the Carol Channing influence in Depp's performance though.

Isn't Jude Law pathetic??? I hope Sienna kicks him to the curb. What a slimeball.

All in all, a nice weekend. Too bad it's so gosh darned hot and friggin' humid here!! I'm dying. *puff*puff*

Well, the reason given in the Wilder version isn't the reason in the book. In the book, Charlie gets the factory by default. I actually think the reasoning in the Wilder version is uber-creepy: I want whoever succeeds me to do things EXACTLY the way I do them, so I need a child whose mind I can mold. In this one, at least, it looks like Wonka and Charlie are equals at the end (in many ways, I think this movie-Wonka is very much like a child himself).

His motivation for the Golden Tickets isn't to do something nice for other people. It's a weird way for him to reproduce.

I need to reread the book, though.

Huh, I never read the book. Maybe if I did I'd have a better understanding of the whole thing. I guess I've learned my lesson. ;)

The book is *great*. One of the formative books of my childhood.

And the Oompa Loompas in this movie were much closer to the ones in the books. All the way down to them getting paid in cocoa beans. I loved these Oompa Loompas. Waaaay better than dwarves in orange makeup and green wigs... :)

Actually I just read the book - Willy does say that if he chooses a child - the child can be "trained" to keep it the way Willy likes it whereas an adult will change it.

But I TOTALLY agree about the default thing. I just relied to Cerisefleur that Charlie could have been just as much of a brat as the other kids - but lasted longer than them during the day. The book is a bit odd - I must say. Can't wait to see the new movie!

You know the only reason to pre order a book I have found is to get the discount. The bookstore I went into on Saturday afternoon had oodles, and no mad rush. That and CVS and STOP AND SHOP were carrying it - I think it would have been hard not to hurt myself tripping over all the copies on Saturday.

Now ifyou pre order the BRITISH version from what I hear it worth it, but that u in color just pisses me off ; )

I got the same discount pre-ordering that I did when I went to buy a second copy that day at B&N. No difference. I'm exchanging a US copy for a UK copy with [info]yokes. :D

Jude Law, what an a$$hole.

I used to fancy him, pre-dumping Sadie. He lost all attractiveness to me when he left her and his children, and now? He can go to hell. I hope this all comes back to him someday.

Conversely, the more I hear about how much Ewan MacGregor loves his (5 years older) wife and children, the sexier and more attractive I find him. Some men just can't GET that many women find fidelity way sexier than being a player.

I feel the same way about Ethan Hawke like Jude Law now. They're both slime. About the only "family man" I don't think I could -ever- find appealing would be Tom Hanks. I'd only like him in an uncle-relative sort of way. But yes, honor and respectability is a very attractive trait to some women. :)

Did you read the book? It is very vague too as to why he does that - and it almost seems like it is just: "well Charlie you are the last of the 5 left - so you must not be bad. You get my factory." The book does explain that if he chooses a kid, he can train the kid to keep the factory the way Willy likes it - whereas an adult will try to change things. But I couldn't help but thinking - what if Charlie happened to be a little snot nose brat too who just happened to be able to hold out longer than the rest.

Ah well - I do not get to see the movie until next week (Tues) when my family visits. Can't wait though.
